Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Looking for an original way to tell your sweetheart or partner how much you love them?
Easy: say it with ads! β€οΈ
Yes, really. Here's the idea behind our very geeky programmatic love potion. βοΈ
How Can Programmatic Advertising Become a Valentine's Day Surprise?
Media traders sometimes use tightly controlled test audiences to check whether a campaign is live or audit how ads are delivered. For Valentine's Day, we're borrowing that concept for a romantic (and slightly ridiculous) thought experiment.
What Would You Need?
π» Access to a DSP (demand-side platform), with permission to run a personal test.
π¨ A couple of romantic ad creatives, ideally in standard display sizes such as 300Γ250 or 320Γ480. You can even ask ChatGPT or Gemini to help design them.
β€οΈ Most importantly, a partner who is happy to opt in to the surprise campaign. Secretly placing a tracking pixel on someone else's device is not a romantic shortcut to GDPR compliance.
How Would a Consent-Based Valentine's Day Campaign Work?
1οΈβ£ Set up a small, permitted test campaign in your DSP, using an audience-building method that complies with the platform's policies and applicable privacy rules.
2οΈβ£ Invite your partner to opt in through an appropriate consent mechanism. The audience should be limited to the person who has knowingly agreed to participate.
3οΈβ£ Prepare your love-message creatives and schedule the campaign for February 14 only.
4οΈβ£ Keep the budget tiny β say β¬5 β and configure delivery carefully. A high bid does not guarantee that an ad will appear, and device/browser restrictions, consent signals, audience thresholds and DSP policies may prevent delivery entirely.
5οΈβ£ If everything lines up, your partner might spot a personalized love note while browsing participating Open Web websites or apps. β€οΈ
Now THAT is a media trader's idea of romance. π
Two Things Not to Forget
πΈ Make sure the campaign is authorized and paid for properly. The accounting team may not find a mysterious ββ¬5 setup errorβ quite as charming as you do. π
π Respect privacy from start to finish. Obtain valid consent where required, follow your DSP's audience and minimum-size rules, and remove the test audience when it is no longer needed. Deleting a segment afterward does not retroactively make unauthorized tracking lawful.
