Programmatic Advertising: How Can You Reach Programmatic Media Traders? 🎯

The other day, I was talking to a sales representative at a media sales house who told me:

β€œIt's getting harder and harder to book meetings with programmatic traders...”

We know the feeling. We follow up with prospects every month! πŸ˜…

Why Is It So Hard to Reach Programmatic Media Traders?

To be fair, you have to understand what their working lives look like.

While paid social traders generally deal with a relatively small number of platforms, programmatic traders are approached by hundreds of potential partners: publishers, resellers, trading desks, data providers, and technology vendors.

Unsurprisingly, many feel overwhelmed by sales outreach and have become extremely selective about the meetings they accept.

So what if we tried something different to stand out?

What if we reached media traders through advertising itself? After all, that's supposed to be our area of expertise! πŸ’ͺ

At GreyFox Ads, we're a small French AdTech company, so our marketing budget is limited.

But here's the interesting part: our working estimate is that there are only around 800 programmatic traders in France. That's a very small B2B audience.

The real challenge isn't necessarily budget. It's targeting precision.

How Can You Advertise to a Niche B2B AdTech Audience?

After brainstorming a little, we came up with several ways to tackle this brief (without resorting to graffiti πŸ˜‰).

1. Specialist AdTech Media

Industry publications such as Open Garden, mind Media and AdExchanger are obvious places to reach programmatic professionals.

The catch? Many French specialist publications don't offer conventional advertising placements, and geographic targeting options on international publications may not fit a France-only campaign.

2. LinkedIn Advertising

LinkedIn allows B2B advertisers to combine company targeting (for example, Publicis Media, Havas Media France, WPP Media, OMD France, Jellyfish or dentsu) with relevant job titles, functions and other professional criteria.

The downside? LinkedIn may not be where these traders spend most of their working day. And broad job-function targeting alone can generate plenty of irrelevant impressions.

3. Geotargeted Programmatic Display and Video

Here's a more creative option: target the areas around major media agency offices with a roughly 1 km radius, then schedule campaigns Monday to Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

High-impact formats such as interstitials or video pre-roll could help maximize attention.

Of course, geotargeting an agency office doesn't prove that the person seeing the ad is a trader. Location accuracy, minimum radius rules, privacy requirements and wasted reach all need to be considered.

4. Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH)

Some media networks operate digital screens inside office buildings and workplaces. Executive Channel Network (ECN) is one example worth exploring.

The appeal is simple: reach media professionals close to where they work, rather than competing for attention in their inboxes.

5. Digital Audio Advertising

An interesting opportunity: reach traders through headphones while they listen to music or podcasts.

Combining suitable audio inventory, audience data and geographic targeting through a DSP could create a focused campaign, subject to inventory availability and privacy constraints.

Hmm... πŸ€”

Looks like we've got some work to do! 😁

What Is the Best Way to Target Programmatic Traders?

For a niche audience such as programmatic media buyers in France, there probably isn't one perfect channel.

A smarter approach is to combine professional targeting, specialist media and carefully selected contextual or geographic signals, then measure which channels actually generate qualified conversations.

And one important distinction: reaching people near an agency isn't the same thing as reaching verified programmatic traders.
