Programmatic Advertising: The GEO Limitations Nobody Talks About Enough πŸ€”

Programmatic Advertising: The GEO Limitations Nobody Talks About Enough πŸ€”

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is becoming a major priority for brands. But is building your entire AI visibility strategy around ChatGPT really a safe long-term bet?

According to an IBM study published in January 2026, 40% of consumers use AI during their purchasing journey. Meanwhile, ChatGPT has been estimated to account for roughly 80% of consumer chatbot usage in some market measurements. Those figures depend heavily on geography, methodology and the period measured, but the trend is clear: AI assistants are becoming an important discovery channel.

Unsurprisingly, a growing number of GEO services promise to measure and improve brand visibility in AI-generated answers.

But there are a few stones in the shoe. πŸͺ¨πŸ‘Ÿ

What Are the Biggest Limitations of Generative Engine Optimization?

1️⃣ AI advertising could change the visibility equation πŸ“£

OpenAI has said that advertising does not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads and organic recommendations should therefore not be confused.

Nevertheless, as advertising formats evolve, brands will have to think about two different ways of reaching users: being organically mentioned by an AI assistant, and appearing in clearly identified sponsored placements.

If more commercial attention shifts toward paid placements, what happens to the value of organic GEO visibility? That remains an open question, not an established outcome.

2️⃣ Will ChatGPT Still Dominate AI Assistants in Five Years?

Google is going all-in on AI to avoid becoming the next Kodak.

And it has some formidable advantages:

  • Distribution: Android, Chrome and Google Search give Google enormous reach across devices, browsers and everyday discovery journeys.
  • Ecosystem integration: Google can bring Gemini and AI-powered Search experiences directly into products that millions of people already use.
  • Model development: Google's progress in generative AI, including image-generation tools, shows how quickly the competitive landscape can evolve.
  • Financial strength: Google's established advertising business gives it substantial resources to invest in AI, while OpenAI's infrastructure and model-development costs remain significant.

Competition over access to search data and distribution could also shape the market. But the specific terms of Google's access restrictions should be assessed case by case rather than treated as a universal ban on competing AI services.

In other words, today's AI market leader is not guaranteed to remain tomorrow's default gateway to information.

3️⃣ Could Sponsored GEO Content Lose Its Influence? πŸ—‘οΈ

Here is another risk that receives too little attention.

Sponsored articles and paid editorial placements are subject to disclosure requirements that vary by jurisdiction. In the future, AI answer engines could decide to discount content identified as sponsored when generating organic recommendations.

That is a hypothetical scenario, not a confirmed policy across major AI assistants.

But imagine investing heavily in sponsored articles purely to influence AI recommendations, only for the models to change how they evaluate those sources overnight.

Your visibility strategy could suddenly become much less effective.

This raises a fundamental question: is paid editorial exposure a sustainable GEO strategy, or are brands better off investing in genuinely useful, independently credible content?

Should Brands Prioritize ChatGPT GEO or Google SEO?

In the short term, brands have good reasons to improve their visibility in ChatGPT. AI assistants can influence research, product discovery and purchase consideration.

But betting everything on a single AI platform is risky.

For us here in France, the parallel is tempting: optimizing exclusively for ChatGPT today could turn out to be like building an entire search strategy around Yahoo in the early 2000s.

Perhaps Google's combination of Search, AI-powered results and Gemini will prove more strategically important over the medium and long term. Perhaps the market will remain fragmented across multiple assistants.

Nobody knows for certain.

Our takeaway: don't confuse GEO with ChatGPT optimization alone. Build content that is valuable, verifiable and accessible across search engines and AI assistants. Diversify where you measure visibility, and keep monitoring how the platforms evolve.
