πŸš€ How to Start Your Own Programmatic Advertising Business

πŸš€ How to Start Your Own Programmatic Advertising Business

The other day, I was talking to a Media Trader who said: β€œIt must be pretty cool to run your own programmatic advertising company!”

My answer? There's nothing stopping you. πŸ˜‰

But what business model should you choose?

If you want to launch a programmatic advertising business, there are three main routes worth considering: becoming an SSP reseller, setting up a trading desk, or building a curation business. Each offers a different balance of inventory access, control, operational complexity, and financial risk.

1️⃣ Option One: Become an SSP Reseller

How does an SSP reseller business work?

You sign an agreement with a supply-side platform (SSP), then integrate its technology with publishers to monetize their advertising inventory.

πŸ‘ Advantages: You can earn a share of revenue from automated programmatic transactions, including open-auction demand, without having to manage every campaign manually.

πŸ‘Ž Challenges: Major publishers already work with numerous SSPs and demand partners. SSPs may be reluctant to onboard another reseller unless you bring meaningful incremental demand. You'll also need to handle publisher integrations and technical operations.

In other words, access to supply is not enough: you need a compelling reason for publishers and SSPs to work with you.

2️⃣ Option Two: Launch a Programmatic Trading Desk

How does a programmatic trading desk work?

You contract with a demand-side platform (DSP), then sell and manage media campaigns for agencies or advertisers, typically under insertion orders (IOs).

πŸ‘ Advantages: A DSP can give you access to a wide range of SSP inventory and audience data marketplaces. You directly control campaign setup, bidding, targeting, optimization, and reporting.

πŸ‘Ž Challenges: You may have to finance media spend before your clients pay you, manage invoicing and collections, and meet DSP minimum-spend or platform-fee requirements. That can create serious cash-flow pressure.

A trading desk offers greater control over execution, but it also requires more working capital and operational resources.

3️⃣ Option Three: Build a Programmatic Curation Business

What is a programmatic curator?

A programmatic curator selects, packages, and enriches advertising inventory into curated deals that agency trading desks can activate through their own DSPs.

To get started, you contract for access to a curation platform or curator seat, then approach agencies and trading desks with curated deals designed around specific media-quality, targeting, or performance requirements.

πŸ‘ Advantages: Depending on the platform and commercial agreement, you can access the supply and data integrations available through your SSP partner, apply your own value-added curation layer, and earn revenue through SSP-managed settlement. You generally do not need to pre-finance the advertiser's entire media budget.

πŸ‘Ž Challenges: You don't directly operate the buyer's DSP campaigns. Deal activation, troubleshooting, delivery, and optimization depend partly on the buyer's setup and on coordination across platforms.

For example, an Equativ curator seat can provide access to eligible bid-request supply made available through Equativ's infrastructure, subject to its technical and contractual scope. It does not automatically mean unrestricted access to every SSP or every impression on the Open Web.

Which Programmatic Advertising Business Model Is Best for a Startup?

There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on your capital, technical capabilities, customer relationships, and the value you can bring to the market.

An SSP reseller focuses on publisher monetization and supply integrations.

A trading desk focuses on buying and optimizing campaigns for advertisers.

A curator focuses on selecting and enhancing supply that other trading desks can activate.

At GreyFox Ads, we're a self-funded French AdTech company, so we chose the third option: programmatic curation. πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

For a small company starting from scratch, we believe this model has three particularly attractive advantages:

  • It lets you build differentiated inventory and data packages without developing a DSP or SSP from scratch.
  • It positions you as a specialist partner to agency trading desks rather than a direct competitor for campaign execution. πŸ˜‡
  • It can reduce upfront media-financing exposure, although commercial, technical, and payment risks still exist.

This is why we built GreyFox Ads around curated deals for high-quality Open Web advertising.

How GreyFox Ads Builds High-Quality Curated Deals

Our approach combines several layers of supply quality and media efficiency:

πŸ“‘ Supply Path Optimization (SPO): Prioritizing direct publisher supply paths.
🚫 Made-for-Advertising (MFA) filtering: Excluding MFA websites and subdomains.
πŸ›‘οΈ Brand Safety: Applying controls to avoid unsuitable content.
πŸ“ Screen Share Optimization: Favoring display formats and video players that occupy a meaningful portion of the screen.
🎯 Audience Addressability: Combining cookie-based, cookieless, and consent-independent approaches where legally and technically permitted.
πŸͺŸ Fee Transparency: Making the programmatic cost chain easier to understand.

The key takeaway? You don't necessarily need to build your own buying technology or become another inventory reseller to launch a programmatic advertising company. Curation offers a third route: create value by improving the quality, targeting, and transparency of inventory that existing DSP buyers can activate.
