Programmatic Advertising & AI: Evolution, Revolution, or Just Hype? 🕵️

Programmatic Advertising & AI: Evolution, Revolution, or Just Hype? 🕵️

[GreyFox Ads guest article for Open Garden, a leading French publication covering programmatic advertising]

If we had to sum up AI in programmatic advertising in 2025, it would be: “Everyone is talking about it. Everyone claims to be using it!”

But let's be honest. In many cases, we're mainly witnessing a rebranding exercise.

Replace familiar terms such as “lookalike modeling” and “algorithms” with “AI”, add a shiny new label, and voilà! You've got yourself an AI-powered solution. 😉

That's what we call AI-washing in AdTech.

But beyond the marketing buzz, there's a much bigger shift worth examining: the emergence of prompt-to-campaign advertising.

What Is Prompt-to-Campaign in Programmatic Advertising?

The idea is simple, at least on paper: describe your advertising objectives in natural language, and let AI systems or autonomous agents handle campaign planning, setup, optimization, and reporting.

Advocates of agentic AI are already envisioning programmatic campaigns created and managed almost entirely by AI.

And let's face it: many of us use ChatGPT and other AI assistants regularly. Their capabilities can be genuinely impressive, so it's tempting to believe that fully autonomous media buying is just around the corner.

But does the technology really deliver on its promises? 🕵️

Three Questions the AdTech Industry Needs to Ask About AI

👉 Does AI actually create measurable incremental value in programmatic campaign execution, or does it mainly automate existing workflows?

👉 Will AI replace programmatic media traders, or change the skills and responsibilities their jobs require?

👉 How much control should advertisers give AI agents over their media budgets, optimization decisions, and reporting?

These questions matter because automation alone isn't proof of better advertising performance. Transparency, accountability, and measurable business outcomes still matter.

Evolution, revolution, or mirage? That's the debate we explore in our guest article for Open Garden.
